~ adv 1 sentence adverb used to emphasize a statement or answer  ("Would it help if you had an assistant?" "It would, indeed." | There are few, if indeed any, authors with such a gift for dialogue.) 2 formal used to introduce additional information that emphasizes what you have just said  (I didn't mind at all. Indeed, I was pleased.) 3 especially BrE used to emphasize the word `very' in expressions such as `very good indeed' and `very much indeed'  (I am very sorry indeed for my foolish behaviour. | Thank you very much indeed.) 4 especially BrE spoken used to express disbelief, surprise, or annoyance at something you have been told  ("He's taken a three hour lunch break." "Has he, indeed?" | "Why would anyone say such a horrible thing?" "Why, indeed?")
